A gritty tale set in the English industrial city of Manchester in the early 60s. It tales the tale of Helen (Dora Bryan) a middle aged single mother of Jo (Rita Tushingham) her 17 year old daughter. The pair move from one squalid dwelling to another as Helen falls behind in the rent as she uses her meagre supply of cash for alcohol. Meanwhile Jo falls into a relationship with a sailor becomes pregnant and finds herself abandoned by both her lover and her mother but is befriended by a young gay man who promises to stand by her. Winner of multi-BAFTAs this was a realism at its best.
