    The Hindi Film Cinema, fondly called Bollywood, continues to grow in popularity today.Bollywood is derived from Bombay and Hollywood.  The interesting term originated in the 1970s when India overtook America as the worlds biggest film producer. The film-maker and scholar, Amit Khanna, and the journalist, Bevinda Collaco, claimed the credit for coining this term.
    Based in Mumbai, India, the Bollywood industry is a part of an even larger Indian film industry.  Not only is it one of the biggest film producers in India, but also one of the biggest centers of film production in the entire world.     Many Bollywood films contain song and dance numbers in the script.The themes typically combine love triangles, comedy, action, songs and dances, and intermissions in a three-hour long extravaganza. The film was a major success, and film makers learned that there was a huge market for musicals. Regional film industries, then, shifted to sound filming. It was not until 1937 that the first colored Hindi film, Kisan Kanya, was made.
    The Golden Age of Hindi cinema came in the period between the 1940s to the 1960s wherein some of the most critically acclaimed Hindi films were produced. Many of the most popular films during this era had social themes that dealt with the working class urban life in India.These include the Raj Kapoor films and Guru Dutt films.
